Abstract

In Cevat Şakir’s works the sea, islands, shores, inlets, fishermen, sponge divers of Bodrum are reflected as a work of art by a master. As he composes his lines the author reflects and pays heed to the feelings, impressions, the sounds, colors and aromas of the Mediterranean. Sounds, colors and aromas mingle and merge. The sea and everything associated with it is under scrutiny. Thus, a pastoral symphony is composed- one of extraordinary beauty and color. Through this symphony one hears the sounds of the sea, feels its soul, and sees, feels as clear as daylight the lives, passions, problems of the poor people who make a living from the sea. It is a beautiful ‘sight’ to be able to clearly envision the lives of these poor fishermen living in the various coves around Bodrum- to see these clearly and without adornment. His stories are full of passion and compassion a sea of these emotions. The greatest of all loves and lives are lived on these shores. Everyone and everything is bright with color. The reader is enveloped in a sense of passion. Poetry, mythological richness and daily life are intertwined. Sailors put on their wings of love to reach the ones they love to return home; they meet up with them… and then the whole of the Mediterranean is illuminated with a beautiful aura
