Motivations and perceptions concerning teaching English as a career: A study with pre-service English language teachers

Abstract

Bu çalışma, İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının İngilizce öğretme konusundaki motivasyonlarını ve algı düzeylerini ve kariyer planlarını araştırmayı amaçlamıştır. Araştırmaya Orta Doğu Teknik Üniversitesi'nde (ODTÜ) İngilizce Öğretmenliği (ELT) programına kayıtlı toplam 118 öğrenci gönüllü olarak katılmıştır. Veriler, Öğretim Seçimini Etkileyen Faktörler (FIT-Choice) ölçeği kullanılarak toplanmıştır ve nicel kısma katılan 118 öğrenciden oluşan aynı örneklemden 13 İngilizce öğretmeni adayı ile görüşmeler yapılmıştır. Sonuçlar, ODTÜ'deki İngilizce öğretmeni adaylarının hem motivasyonlarının hem de algı düzeylerinin yüksek olduğunu göstermiştir. Veri analizi, sınıf düzeyi, akademik başarı ve bölümün tercih sırasına göre öğrencilerin motivasyon ve algı düzeylerinde anlamlı bir farklılık olduğunu ortaya koymuştur. Ancak cinsiyete ve yurt dışı deneyimine göre istatistiksel olarak bir farklılık yoktur. Analiz bulguları, ODTÜ Yabancı Diller Eğitimi (FLE) bölümünde öğrenim gören İngilizce öğretmen adaylarının öğretmenlik tercihlerinde dışsal faktörlerin en belirleyici yordayıcı olduğunu ileri sürmüştür. Diğer bir sonuç ise öğrencilerin çoğunun gelecekte İngilizce öğretmeyi planlasalar bile, çalışmak istedikleri seviyelerin birbirinden farklılık gösterdiği, bazı öğrencilerin yüksek lisans yapıp akademik olarak kendilerini geliştirmeyi düşündükleri ve birkaç öğrencinin öğretmenlik yapmak yerine farklı sektörlerde çalışmayı planladığı yönündedir.

This study sought to investigate the motivations and perceptions level of pre-service English teachers and their career plans on teaching English. A total of 118 students enrolled in an English Language Teaching (ELT) program at Middle East Technical University (METU) voluntarily participated in the study. Data were collected using the The Factors Influencing Teaching Choice (FIT-Choice) scale and interviews with 13 pre-service English teachers within the same sample of 118 students participated in quantitative part. The results indicated that both the motivation and perception levels of pre-service English teachers at METU are high. The data nalysis revealed that there is a significant difference of students' level of motivation and perception according to grade level, academic success and the choice order of the department. However, there is no statistically difference according to gender and abroad experience. The findings of the analysis proponed that extrinsic factors are the most determinant predictors on teaching choice of pre-service English teachers at METU, Foreign Language Education (FLE) department. Another result is even if most of the students plan to teach English in future, the levels they want to work with shows differences, some students think of doing their master's degree and improve themselves academically, and several students plan to work in different sectors rather than teaching.
